Microsoft OneNote for Mac helps you detect and fix spelling errors as you type. This can save you time and effort while keeping your notes error-free.

Mar 19, 2020  If the spelling checker comes to a language you do not have, you may see a warning message that 'Word can not start the spelling checker.' That means that some text in the document (or the whole document) is in a language Mac Word doesn't have: you will then need to set the language, as you have been doing.

Check spelling and grammar as you type

• If available, click one of the suggestions to substitute the misspelled word.

• Click Ignore, to reject the error detection.

• Click Add to Dictionary, to make sure that OneNote doesn’t detect the word as an error in the future.

• Click Smart Lookup, to do a quick Bing search on the word.

Check spelling on an entire page

To check spelling on an entire page, do the following:

1. Click Tools > Spelling.

2. In the Spelling pane on the right, do any of the following:

   • Click Ignore to skip the currently selected text and move on to the next item.

   • Click Add to add the currently selected text to the dictionary so that OneNote doesn’t detect the word as an error in the future.

   • Select a replacement word in the list, and then at the bottom of the pane, click Change.

Turn automatic spelling check on or off

1. On the menu bar, click OneNote > Preferences.

2. In the OneNote Preferences dialog box, click Spelling.

3. Under Spelling and AutoCorrect, check or clear the Check spelling as you type check box.

Turn automatic capitalization on or off

1. On the menu bar, click OneNote > Preferences.

2. In the OneNote Preferences dialog box, click Spelling.

3. Under Spelling and AutoCorrect, check or clear the Capitalize the first letter of sentences check box.

Turn periods with double-space on or off

You can set OneNote to add a period after a word or sentence by tapping the space bar twice.

1. On the Apple menu, click System Preferences.

2. In System Preferences window, click keyboard.

3. Click the Text tab.

4. Check or clear the Add period with double-space check box.

Check the spelling of your notes in a different language

You can change the proofing language for text on a page.

Note: You cannot change the proofing language for an entire notebook. Nor can you set the default proofing language for all future sessions with OneNote.

1. On the menu bar, click Tools > Set Proofing Language.

2. In the Language list, select the language you want OneNote to use during an spelling check.

3. Click OK.

4. After the spell checking is complete, the spelling language will revert back to the original language.

Thankfully, Office 2011 for Mac can help you fix most spelling errors. Don’t let that make you think you don’t have to do any checking of your own, though, because even Microsoft Word’s advanced grammar checker can’t tell when to use there,they’re, or their.

A red squiggly line under the misspelled word indicates a spelling error. You can rectify such errors by right-clicking the word and then choosing the correct spelling from the resulting contextual menu. With the same procedure, you can also get help with grammar by Control-clicking or right-clicking words with green squiggly lines in Microsoft Word. Office also has AutoCorrect, which fixes spelling errors for you while you type.

Even with all the squiggles, you might accidently overlook an error. A good idea is to always run the spell and grammar checker before you share a document with someone. The most common way to fire up the spell and grammar checker differs depending upon the application you’re using:

• In Word, use any of these methods:

  • Choose Tools→Spelling and Grammar.

    Prior to the update, I can view & set Asian font using the Asian name of a font family (e.g. Microsoft autoupdate mac won't update 2019. But after update all fonts are displayed using English font family name. ' 細明體' instead of ' PMingLiU').

  • Select some text or click a squiggle and then press Option+F7. Choose spelling or grammar from the contextual menu.

  • Click the book at the bottom of the window.

  Notice that Word has both spell and grammar checking, but other Office applications have only spell checking.

• In Excel and PowerPoint, choose Tools→Spelling.

• In Outlook, choose any of these methods:

  • Choose Edit→Spelling and Grammar→Show Spelling and Grammar, or press Command-Shift-semicolon.

  • Choose Edit→Spelling and Grammar→Check Document Now, or press Command-semicolon to advance to the next flagged mistake without using the dialog.

  • In the Message Compose window, select the Options tab of the Ribbon, and click the Spelling button to display the Spelling and Grammar dialog.
